Summary

Jaime and his wife Maria live in a poverty-stricken town in Mexico. They trudge through life, but enjoy each other's company. Their widowed daughter-in-law, Lupe lives with them. When Maria dies unexpectedly, Jaime becomes so distraught that he stops caring for himself and Lupe. The two move from relative to relative, but tensions mount and Jaime and Lupe leave. In time, Lupe lands a job at a factory and Jaime scours the streets and neighborhoods looking for random jobs. He tries to get her to marry Luis. Completely unwilling at first, Lupe eventually learns to appreciate Luis
